Recent Events and Achievements
World of Matchcraft: Ken Underhill’s sensational World of Matchcraft collection was formally unveiled. With its distinctive nautical theme and impressive mural, the flotilla of historic sailing vessels and fighting navy ships now feel right at home. The scale modeled collection of matchcraft replicas include the Tower Bridge of London while the truly unique ship within a bottle within another bottle is a must see.
Steam Loco “Eudlo” Refurbished: In keeping with these heritage celebrations, the Nambour Museum proudly unveiled the refurbished historic steam locomotive “Eudlo”. With the assistance of funding grants, both the restoration of the Eudlo and the erection of the new shed in which it is now housed have recently become possible. As well as all of the other heritage exhibits on display at the museum, a special feature included one on Nambour’s first selectors and business houses.
Centenary of the Telephone: To mark the centenary of the first telephone in Nambour (and indeed what is now known as the Sunshine Coast) in October 1908, the Nambour Museum presented a special display which focused on the technology, the equipment, the people who worked for the company and the customers. Perhaps more than most, the telecommunications business has always formed an integral part of personal and business life and therefore is closely akin to the changes in local communities. Collection and preservation of those memories for future generations was the focus of the centenary celebrations.
There was a special Open Day and displays to commemorate the occasion. Content included working telephone and telegraph displays, the latest mobile, wireless internet and digital technologies, photographic images from the past 100 years, pioneering family histories on show and a special commemorative video call by a representative of the telephone caller who used a magneto telephone 100 years ago.Book Launch: "Nambour: A Pictorial History" Two esteemed members and local historians, Audienne Blyth and Barbara Want painstakingly researched and collected images and details for this exciting publication which was a first for Nambour. The 100 page publication provides an excellent pictorial overview of the town from its infancy encapsulating the many events and changes which have moulded the local community into what we see today. Publication was assisted by a Q150 grant, an RADF grant and generous sponsorship by the local community.
Carpark Upgrade: With the new Loco Shed completed and other large machinery items now securely mounted at the Bury Street entrance, Sunshine Coast Regional Council assisted with the levelling and resurfacing of the Museum's rear carpark. This work ensures maximum utilisation of the space available and provides easier access for members and visitors.
New Internal Furnishings: The old linoleum flooring in the hallways and carpet in the reception area have been replaced with new hard wearing vinyl. New kitchen cupboards are a welcome addition, particularly for group visits, and the special exhibitions room has gained some quality display furniture.
